Cashing out that 401k for a used  Lotus was a good financial decision.

I thought about using some stock I had to pay for my 328i when I got it in March of 2017. Would have been a really good decision.

Still, a Lotus can't be a better investment, unless it's a rare model that will appreciate in value some day.

I’m actually putting a sell order on my stuff today, then repurchasing it later . Mutual Fund to ETF movement to save some management fees. Waiting a few days and hopefully it crashes a bit more after new years day when I can deposit more to do the rebalancing all at once.

Depends when you cashed it out. It was down 500 points on Monday, up 1k yesterday, and down 500 today. That puts things exactly where they were as of last week, according to my math.

I think a large part of the problem is computerized auto-traders. If a stock gets priced really well, all of the computers say “buy”, thus driving prices and the market up. The same happens in the opposite scenario when they all try to sell.

Just as it always has been, the stock market is a long game. It will eventually go up, just as it will eventually go down. But as a rule it will trend upwards long term.

Yeah, I made the mistake of evaluating my year-over-year financial status on Christmas Eve - even with significant savings/investment during the year , there was essentially no change in total net worth thanks to the market tanking last week .

I just take solace in knowing that my number of holding increased, and I’m in it for the long haul, so it should sort itself out some year before I need it . (Holding n o individual stocks but only index funds helps with that attitude.)

Still wish I’d taken some gains and bought a fun car before the recent crash, though.

All Lotuses are rare. But there aren’t enough fanboys to make trims appreciate like Porsche. But it’s looking like the days of 20-25k Elise’s are passed.

Wild fluxes generally shake investor/consumer  confidence, which obviously isn’t a guarantee of a coming bear market.

Also if there is a longer downturn in the market/economy I doubt lotuses and other sports cars will hold their value*

*unless the government gives another bailout to class of people who ‘ invest’ in such things.

The Elise I think is a special case though, because it’d be close to impossible to make a car like it again with the regulatory burdens (and that’s from Ed Bolian, not me )

It’s hard to make any car with last decade’s regulations

Looking at the week, the Dow finished actually up about 100 points compared to open on Monday.

There was a 1500 point swing from high to low in that timeframe, however. That’s opportunity to lose a lot or gain a lot.
